Simultaneous and sequential approaches for pixel matching by propagation

Abstract

Pixel matching is an important step in 3D reconstruction. Among all existing methods, we take a closer look at the ones using seed propagation. They start from a set of reliable matches (seeds) and look for a correspondent of the neighbours of a seed in the neighbourhood of this seed correspondent. There are two kinds of approaches: sequential and simultaneous. In this paper, we give a state of the art of these methods and we propose to improve the simultaneous one. This is done in two steps using two correlation measures. One of these is robust to occlusions near depth discontinuities. We also propose a comparative study of these different approaches.
